Family Life:  To be offered in the 2012-2013 Religious Formation Year

What's it all about?

The Family Life Program will be an alternative form of Religious Education.  It will be an intergenerational approach to faith formation which will encourage the intellectual and spiritual development of people at all stages of growth and maturity.  This program will be anchored in the events and practices of the SJN Parish Community and prepare its participants to practice their faith through intergenerational (child-parent-grandparent) faith learning and sharing.  The program will emphasize both the home and the parish as the critical settings for learning and living the Catholic faith.  Home instruction will be enriched and fortified through monthly teaching and faith-sharing sessions in the parish setting.

What kinds of topics are covered?

This program will extend over an 8 year range and include yearly topics such as:

· The Creed

· Jesus Christ

· The Church

· The Sacraments

· Christian Moral Life

· Christian Prayer

· Catholic Social Teaching

· The Life of Discipleship

How are the monthly sessions formatted?

Each monthly session will begin with a large group gathering of all the participating families for Opening Prayer and a Large Group Presentation of the monthly theme that will be designed to reach all ages.  Following the Large Group Presentation will be Small Group Lessons designed to provide age specific lessons and activities for children, adolescents, and adults.  The monthly session will culminate in a Family Activity in which individual families will gather for an activity designed to reinforce the monthly lesson and provide families with an opportunity to engage in discussion and faith-sharing as a family.  The monthly session will close with a Large Group Gathering for Closing Prayer.

What materials are provided?

Each month each family will receive a periodical, called "People of Faith: Generations"  that will cover the monthly topic to take home and work on together.  The periodical, specially published for this series, will cover a full range of related topics included in the monthly theme.  The periodical will contain articles and suggested activities that appeal to various age levels.  Each family will have the opportunity to engage in home study and reflection at their own pace and convenience.
