Rite of Christian Initiation of Children

General Statement

The RCIC is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults adapted for children.  This process follows the RCIA pattern of liturgically marked periods in the conversion process closely in order to prepare children to receive the sacraments of initiation.  However it differs from the RCIA in catechetical method and approach at Saint John Neumann Catholic Church by involving parents and siblings in the learning process via a family formatted presentation of scriptural and doctrinal teaching.

Children participating in the RCIC Program must be seven years of age or over whose parents have expressed the desire to fully initiate them into the Catholic faith.  They fall in one of three general categories:

· They have not been baptized

· They were baptized in another faith tradition, but their parents wish them to enter into the faith and sacramental life of the Church through Reconciliation and Eucharist, and/or Confirmation

· They were baptized Catholic, but have not received formal instruction in the faith and missed the reception of one of the sacraments at the usual time.

Catechetical sessions with specially trained catechists prepare the children for the reception of the sacraments. Following their reception of the sacraments, participants are then expected to continue their faith formation through traditional class instruction and involvement in the communal and liturgical life of the parish.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

General Statement

This is a program in which the non-baptized and baptized non-Catholics learn about the Catholic Church and are led by experienced and dedicated Catholics on a journey toward entrance into the Catholic faith.  This program is also for those Catholic adults who were baptized, but did not receive the other Sacraments of Initiation which are Eucharist, Reconciliation, and Confirmation.

It is a process that generally begins in September and climaxes at the Easter Vigil when the participants are received into full communion with the Church.  The group meets every Monday evening.

If you are interested in sharing your knowledge and love of your faith, RCIA offers many opportunities such as being a sponsor, presenter, facilitator, or offering hospitality or prayer.
